BLACKFRIARS BRIDGE

Refettorio is located within Crowne Plaza in Blackfriars. Situated on New Bridge Street, close to Blackfriars Bridge in the City of London, north of the River Thames. Opposite Blackfriars Underground Exit 8 and Thameslink station.

Blackfriars Bridge crosses the river at the approximate point where the River Fleet once entered the Thames. The first Blackfriars Bridge was begun in 1760, completed in 1770, and removed in 1860 and originally named the William Pitt Bridge, not Blackfriars, after the Prime Minister. The present bridge, which was begun in 1865 and opened in 1869, was designed by J Cubitt. The use of colour on the metalwork of Blackfriars Bridge today is a fine example of the restoration work that has gone on throughout London in the latter part of the 20th century. Not that these were the original colours but Blackfriars now rejoices in a lively red, white and gold motif with gold emblems fixed into the supports.
